ABOUT BUCKO

Stephen Buckman is a self-taught landscape photographer who has worked in the Eastern Massachusetts area for almost 12 years. Many of his photos are from these surrounding areas because of the scenic opportunities presented by the many orchards, rivers, woods, and ponds.

Stephen also graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts with a major in Film Composition and Piano. In his photography as well as his music, he strives for a sense of space that emphasizes openness and avoids clutter. He explains, "Just as the musical score sets the mood for a movie, color composition can set the mood in landscape photography. Some of the most interesting scores are made by the intertwining of the simplest of melodies. Some of the most interesting photographs are made by intertwining of the simplest elements in nature."

His work is very simple and peaceful. "I like scenes that have an abundance of color. Going back to the same places at different times of the day and seasons is quite important in getting the photo I want. There is always something new to photograph each time. Timing and patience are the most critical parts of landscape photography. Nature is always changing, minute to minute."

THE MUSIC

Stephen's interest in Film Music started when he was about twelve years old when he purchased the soundtrack to the television series SPACE: 1999. A year later he purchased STAR WARS. Some of his other favorite soundtracks are THE DARK CRYSTAL by Trevor Jones, RETURN TO OZ by David Shire, STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, SUPERGIRL, and LIONHEART by Jerry Goldsmith. Of course, he likes most scores. He currently owns about 300 LP's and about 855 CD film soundtracks. He is an ASCAP Member (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) with an indie music label BIG BAD BUCKO MUSIC. He has scored two local films: an Independent Horror/Slasher titled, "Eamon's Road" and a documentary titled, "The Times Were Never So Bad: The Life of Andre Dubus". This film premiered at the Newburyport Film Festival, the New England Film and Video Festival at the Coolidge Corner Cinema, Brookline, MA, The Rhode Island Film Festival, and other festivals around the United States.

THE PHOTOGRAPHY

Stephen started landscape photography in March of 1997. This was due in part because of Comet Hale-Bopp. Hale-Bopp was his inspiratation. With it's bright head and tail juxtapose over landscapes, it made for some great photography. His other inspiration is cinematography and nature calendars. He is knowledgeable with both film and digital photography.

His photo exhibitions include three solo shows, one at The John B. Hynes Convention Center in Boston, The Newton Public Library in Newton, MA, and the Minuteman Airport Cafe in Stow, MA. His group shows include two at the All About Arts Center in Roslindale, MA,and one with the Boston Camera Club at the Hynes Convention Center. He has won contests on the Internet and at the Boston Camera Club where he use to be public relations director. He has also been in the annual Massachusetts College of Art auction.

THE ARTWORK

Stephen was torn between art and music college at the time when extremely popular adventure and sci-fi films were heavily into grandeoso film music, modeling, and special effects. He applied to many art colleges around New Englandand California. He was accepted to Massachusetts College of Art but was also accepted to Berklee College of Music where he eventually attended and majored in Film Scoring and Piano. At that time, he drew movie stills from sciencefiction films and portraits, but mostly images that came out of his head. His portraits which can be seen on his artwork page took a lot of patience. He is dedicated to his fine detailed drawings and can always remember staying up to the early hours of the morning to work on his art.
